What Is the Beep Card?
The Beep card is a reloadable contactless smart card used as the primary fare payment method across Manila's LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 rail systems. Introduced by AF Payments Inc., the card has become the standard way to pay for train rides in Metro Manila and is also accepted on select buses, P2P bus services, and some payment terminals.
Think of it as Manila's version of London's Oyster card or Tokyo's Suica. It eliminates the need to queue for single journey tickets every time you ride, making your commute significantly faster and more convenient.
Where to Buy a Beep Card
LRT and MRT Stations: Available at ticket booths in every LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 station. Simply approach the counter and ask for a new Beep card. The cost is PHP 100, which includes a non-refundable PHP 20 card fee and PHP 80 initial stored value.
Convenience Stores: Select 7-Eleven, Ministop, and FamilyMart branches sell Beep cards. Look for the Beep logo on the store entrance.
Online: You can order a Beep card through the official Beep website or through e-commerce platforms like Lazada and Shopee. Some limited-edition designs are available online.
Tip: During peak commute hours, station counters may have long lines. Buying from a convenience store near your home can save time.
How to Load (Top Up) Your Beep Card
Station Ticket Booths: Hand your card to the cashier and specify the amount you want to load. Minimum load is PHP 50.
Beep Load Machines: Automated kiosks available at select stations. Insert your card, choose the load amount, and pay in cash.
Convenience Stores: 7-Eleven, Ministop, and other partner stores can load your card at the counter.
GCash and Maya: Load your Beep card directly from your GCash or Maya e-wallet through their respective apps. This is particularly convenient if you want to load from home or while on the go.
Online Banking: Select banks allow Beep card loading through their mobile banking apps.
Maximum Stored Value: The Beep card can hold up to PHP 10,000. For most daily commuters, keeping a balance of PHP 200 to PHP 500 is practical.
Using Your Beep Card
Entering the Station: After passing through security, approach any turnstile with the contactless card symbol. Tap your Beep card firmly on the reader. The screen will display your remaining balance and the gate will open.
Exiting the Station: Tap your card again at the exit turnstile. The fare is automatically deducted based on the distance travelled. The screen shows the fare charged and your new balance.
Insufficient Balance: If your balance is too low for the trip, the exit gate will not open. Proceed to the station counter to add load before exiting. To avoid this, keep at least PHP 50 on your card at all times.
On Buses: For Beep-enabled buses, tap your card on the reader when boarding. Some buses require a tap on entry and exit; others charge a flat fare on entry.
Beep Card Tips and Tricks
1. Register your card: Visit beeptopay.com to register your Beep card. This allows you to check your balance online, view trip history, and protect your balance if the card is lost.
2. Load on weekends: Station queues are shorter on weekends and off-peak hours. Load a larger amount to avoid frequent top-ups.
3. Keep it accessible: Store your Beep card in a cardholder, phone case, or lanyard for quick tapping. Fumbling through your bag at the turnstile slows everyone down.
4. Check your balance regularly: You can check at any station reader -- just tap and read the screen without entering the turnstile.
5. Card expiry: Beep cards are valid for five years from the date of purchase. After that, you will need to buy a new one.
6. Damaged cards: If your card is cracked or not reading properly, visit a station counter. They may be able to transfer your balance to a new card.
Beep Card vs Single Journey Token
Why you should get a Beep card instead of buying single journey tickets every time:
- Speed: Skip the long ticketing queues entirely. Just tap and go.
- Convenience: Works across LRT-1, LRT-2, MRT-3, and select buses -- one card for everything.
- No small change needed: No more scrambling for exact fare.
- Trip history: Registered cards let you track your spending and travel patterns.
- Future-proof: The Beep ecosystem is expanding to more transport modes and retail payments.
For tourists staying even just 2-3 days, the Beep card pays for itself in saved time alone.
